Born Dorothy Walton Gatley, Ann Harding changed her name because her father, a high-ranking Army officer, disapproved of her career choice. The way she 'chats' with the boy, like when she told him the Elephant tale, is so natural. She just didn't survive being typecast in the 30s, so her acting slowed to a trickle, or she probably could have been as successful as the other tops stars in the 40s and beyond. Great post-TY!

The Mitchell and Durant comedy team is really bad in this flick. They were in a couple of other Alice Faye films. Do not know why though.

Another gem I'd never heard of. i thought Montgomery was wonderful. Reminds me of Lionel Barrymore in "Twentieth Century". I wonder if Montgomery's Saxon was sort of modelled on Barrymore's Jaffe. His last scene is really great.

Audrey Totter is beautiful and and so into carácter.

Frances Dee was charming and a very accomplished actress. She was excellent in The Silver Cord... I enjoyed her more than Irene Dunne. ❤

The other face of The Producers kind of story. Loved it. Writing is for people with long haul tenacity.

This is the silliest movie that I've ever seen. No woman would run off and marry a man that she didn't love on a whim like that. I never would, and neither would my grandmothers have done such a thing, and they were the same age as the young people depicted here. We come from privileged backgrounds, made our debuts, etc.-----but we had emotional strength, and would never have conducted ourselves like these pitiful characters.

Whoever labeled this "Film Noir" obviously knows nothing of what constitutes the concept of Film Noir. "The Saxon Charm" has NOTHING TO DO WITH FILM NOIR. If you want to see John Payne in great Film Noir watch "The Crooked Way" or "99 River Street." Robert Montgomery and Audrey Totter are equally mesmerizing in NOIR offering "The Lady in the Lake." Montgomery in "Ride the Pink Horse," and Totter is an endearing NOIR siren in "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Lady in the Lake," "The Unsuspected," Boxing Noir "The Set-Up" and "Tension." Just because a film is in black and white doesn't make it NOIR. "The Saxon Charm," is not even a distance cousin let alone and offering in the noir family.

TN VALLEY AUTHORITY, the project, Kingsport was created for this! The model town. I live about 25 miles from there!

Another stunner!!! A true lesson in what could be if men and women both didn't just grab the quickest convenience of any sort just because like threw something a little hard their way. 😢😢

Not in the best condition, but quite viewable. A United Artists release in the US. Technicolor had released it's first two-strip feature in 1922 as well. One-time boxer Victor McLaglan would eventually cross the Atlantic and win the 1935 Oscar for acting in "The Informer" at RKO.

Fox Film was teetering at this point, so they put their two best romantic leads together one more time. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell scored big hits as silent stars at Fox in the late 20's. Ginger Rogers was established as a singer and dancer, but wanted to hone her dramatic skills, which is why she made movies like this, and it paid off later. And Fox used little Shirley Temple any and everywhere they could because she drew box office. Didn't matter much; Darryl F. Zaunuck's Twentieth Century Pictures took over a year later.

Racy pre code movie;speakeasy bust,Joan in a bathtub,cute little dog,decadent Paris and the business with the bed. The serenade to the cleaner was a nice touch. Fun even 92 years later.
